The limited success achieved by people in solving their grievances under Right to Information (RTI) act has triggered a mass level awareness campaign across the city to give India "Purna Swaraj" (complete independence).
"The act says it is government responsibility to provide information on RTI. No public department has taken workshops for the people yet. We thought of taking the nation to Purna Swaraj through empowering people with information." Mahiti Adhikar Manch (MAM) convenor Baskar Prabhu told reporters.
"The level of ignorance amongst the people run deep inside. Many people don't know how to procure death certificates. We intend to free the country from this ignorance by informing them through RTI," Prabhu said.
It has started special RTI clinics at public places, beginning with Western Railway suburban stations. The campaign has already got huge response with 3,750 people registering themselves at clinics organised in Dadar and Andheri stations last month.
"The programme began with conducting two minute basic workshop on importance of RTI, from whom to get the information, penalty for not giving information amongst others," he said.
The volunteers then had to narrate their success stories within 30 seconds. People were asked if they had any grievances. If yes, then they were asked two issues for which they sought redressal.
